Everything created by God has a specific purpose. God never creates anything at random, and He always carries out His plan. In this study, we will discover the purpose of God’s supernatural power and how to receive and handle it properly.

The Main Objectives of God’s Supernatural Power

Jesus did not give us His power in vain. He had clear, specific objectives in mind that are directly related to the ______________________ (60) of His kingdom on earth. Let us look at eight of those objectives:

  1. To form and edify the Christian character

Character cannot be changed on the basis of personal ideas, concepts, philosophies, achievements, rules, norms, or disciplines. To effect change in character, we need God’s supernatural power. Religion—following laws to please God—cannot change man’s inner self; this can happen only by God’s supernatural grace.

Grace is God’s divine power that helps us to obey God and function like Him.

  1. To develop of an effective prayer life

Jesus said, “The spirit indeed is ______________ (61), but the flesh is ________(62) (Matthew 26:41). Therefore, when your flesh refuses to seek God, you need to ask for His grace to withstand all temptation, and you do this by faith.

  1. To fulfil ministerial functions and service to God

Serving God effectively is impossible if we depend on our own strength to do it. The preaching and teaching of the gospel must be anointed with supernatural power from God.

  1. To have victory over sin

We cannot overcome sin in our own strength. Sin was conquered on the cross of Calvary. There, we received the power to live a clean, pure life.

  1. To defeat Satan and his demons

There are two kingdoms in ________________ (63) —the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness—and we are in the middle of this war. Jesus defeated Satan at the cross, but believers have to take action and manifest that victory on earth.

  1. To have an obedient heart

For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed. (Romans 15:18)

We can appeal to people’s reason, but this will work for only a short time. The supernatural power of God alone can leave a permanent imprint in their spirit.

  1. To have the ability to achieve great results in a short time

“So, when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.” (Acts 14:23)

I estimate that the apostles accomplished this feat in approximately six months. When God’s power manifests, it produces an atmosphere in which the Holy Spirit is able to __________________ (64) and deliver those who have been in churches for a long time without ever experiencing real change.

A message full of God’s power can make us advance in minutes to a place that would have taken years to reach in the natural.

  1. To Become effective witnesses for Christ

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

A witness is someone who personally experiences or acquires knowledge directly from the source and is capable of presenting evidence to prove what he or she saw or heard.

We were created in God’s image to do what He does.

When do we receive the power to do what He does? We receive it when we are baptized—or filled—with the Holy Spirit.
